THE APPRENTICE

Jockey Amelia Hauschild Races For Her First Win

Apprentice jockey Amelia Hauschild competes in her first professional race

Amelia Hauschild has ambition to ride in the Kentucky Derby one day, but she knows how tough it is to be a young woman in the sport of kings. In this short documentary, the 16-year-old has just gotten her apprentice jockey license, and competes in her first professional race at Turf Paradise in Phoenix, Ariz. Hauschild is among the youngest jockeys in the west today. Her mother says her daughter always wanted to be a jockey — she never outgrew her childhood passion — and now she’s finishing high school through online courses so she can train daily.

Client:  TIME

This short film was pitched to TIME by producer John Hubbell after he learned about an aspiring teenage jockey who was about to enter her first professional race. He contacted Lance Murphey, who was working on a commercial shoot in Palm Springs about 4 hrs away. The pair responded quickly and spent the weekend filming the buildup to Amelia Hauschild’s first professional race.

Role: Cinematographer, producer and editor

The film was shot over a weekend at Turf Paradise Racetrack in Phoenix. The shoot utilized a combination of fixed and remote cameras for the race footage as well as a drone for overall shots of the racetrack. Filmed and edited by Lance Murphey. Written and produced by John Hubbell. Score by Emil Friis. Justine Simons, Executive Producer for TIME.

A Defining Moment

Amelia’s openness to reveal her training regimen, to invite our team to the small shack she was living in near the racetrack, and to welcome us to see every part of her life, including the behind-the-scenes jockey areas at the racetrack, are what allowed our team to capture a revealing picture of the grit and determination that led to this defining moment of her career. Amelia’s mother Heidi was equally welcoming and helped fill in the history that led up to Amelia’s first race.
